Core Software Systems Intern

Zoox is offering an internship opportunity for a Core Software Systems Intern in Foster City, CA, with a hybrid work model. The internship is open to students currently pursuing a B.S., M.S., Ph.D., or advanced degree in a relevant engineering program. Interns must be returning to school after completing the internship and are expected to commit to a 12-week program starting in May or June 2026. Relocation to the Bay Area or Boston is required.

The Core Software Systems team is responsible for building the foundational platform for Zoox’s autonomous robotics system. Interns may be matched with specialized teams such as robotics middleware, health monitoring and diagnostics, high-performance data logging, and sensor driver development. They will also assist in curating and accessing driving data across Zoox’s fleet.

The Middleware Runtime and APIs team focuses on developing and maintaining core components of the robotics platform. Interns will support platform-agnostic software interfaces, task schedulers, robot state machines, runtime control systems, high-throughput data transport, and system-wide diagnostics.

Requirements:

• Currently enrolled in a relevant engineering program
• Returning to school after the internship
• Good academic standing
• Commitment to a 12-week internship in 2026
• At least one prior internship or project in a relevant field
• Ability to relocate to the Bay Area or Boston
• No use of proprietary information in academic or published work

Qualifications:

• Strong proficiency in C++ (C++14/17)
• Proficiency in Python (Python3+)
• Deep knowledge of operating systems
• Experience with system-level software

Bonus Qualifications:

• Experience with AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Cursor, Claude Code)
• Experience with robotics frameworks (e.g., ROS/ROS2)
• Experience with data at scale
• Experience with auction algorithms
• Experience with AWS or cloud infrastructure
• Experience with GPU/CUDA programming

Compensation:

• Monthly salary range: $5,500 to $9,500
• Varies by geographic location and level of education
• Additional benefits may include medical insurance and a housing stipend
